Laboratory Services
A well-standardized semen analysis is critical to the proper evaluation of the infertile male. Unlike many laboratory tests, the semen analysis cannot be performed with automated equipment. The quality of the semen analysis relies therefore on meticulous methods of analysis and the commitment and training of the personnel. The Male Reproductive Clinic is dedicated to providing high quality semen analysis and is graded biannually against national standards. Quality control is rigorously performed every day of specimen processing.

Sperm Processing for Intrauterine Insemination
Artificial insemination is a form of assisted reproduction in which the partner's sperm or a donor's sperm is injected directly into the uterine cavity. During intercourse, sperm is naturally separated from the seminal fluid (watery part of the ejaculate) by the cervical mucus. Since intrauterine injection bypasses this step, sperm processing is mandatory prior to injecting sperm into the uterus. Men who present for insemination with an abnormal semen analysis require special laboratory processing to maximize their chances for fertility success. Husband/partner insemination is most commonly performed on fresh sperm specimens. Intrauterine insemination with husband/partner frozen sperm specimens is occasionally performed at the Male Reproductive Clinic. The decision to proceed with husband/partner frozen sperm specimens needs to be discussed in advance with the medical director.
The Male Reproductive Clinic participates in donor sperm insemination using banked sperm. National laboratories specializing in sperm banking and distribution provide donor male profiles according to physical characteristics. The Male Reproductive Clinic's clinical coordinator can assist you in choosing a suitable sperm bank and a donor sperm specimen.
Cryopreservation of Sperm
(sperm banking)Sperm freezing is performed for a variety of reasons including vasectomy reversal, planned cancer treatment, problems with ejaculation, and husband inaccessibility at the time of ovulation. Frozen sperm can be used for both intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization. The need for freezing sperm and expected fertility treatment needs to be closely coordinated between the male fertility specialist, female fertility specialist and laboratory medical director.
Semen Cultures for Infection
Semen cultures are occassionally ordered when symptoms suggest a genital infection or when the semen analysis demonstrates signs of infection. Many of the types of bacteria that infect the male urinary tract and reproductive system are non sexually transmitted bacteria, rather bacteria normally present in the groin. Many men can develop low grades of infection from these bacteria and present with no symptoms. Semen cultures identify the type of bacteria and the antibiotic type that will best treat the infection. Antibiotic treatment is quite successful in eradicating urethral, prostate, and genital duct infections.
